IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sara Louise
Warrenfeltz Gernand
November 30, 1934 – November 30, 2021
Sara Warrenfeltz Gernand died peacefully October 10, 2022, while a resident in the memory care unit of Commonwealth Senior Living Community in Hagerstown, Maryland.
Born January 3, 1935, she was the only child of J. Hugh and Laura Bernadette Warrenfeltz.
Her youth was spent exploring the family dairy farm on Rowe Road, Smithsburg. She moved to Sabillasville tearfully as a teenager when her parents sold the farm. At Thurmont High School she played the piano for school productions before graduating in 1952.
Sara graduated from Dickinson College in 1956 with a major in chemistry and a minor in Bridge.
She met her husband, Arthur, at a carnival. They married in 1956 and soon moved to the mountains near Eylers Valley where they raised three children in the wilderness and were never bored.
Sara was a teacher, a substitute teacher, and the manager of her father's real estate business. She was an active member of the Northwestern Frederick County Civic Association, serving as an officer for many terms. In retirement she and Arthur continued to serve the community and also traveled widely, visiting Italy, Czechoslovakia, France, Ireland, England, and many national parks. She and Arthur tricked out a minivan for their camping trips.
Sara had many talents and interests. She was a long-suffering fan of the Washington Redskins, she played the piano beautifully, made wonderful food (she mastered Chinese cuisine in the 1970s), took up fly fishing, made jewelry and fashionable clothes, created rustic hypertufa pots, and more.
She is survived by her husband, Arthur, three children – Renée of New York City; Jeffrey and wife Barbara of Sparks, Maryland; David, of West Hollywood, California – and by grandson Nate, who is a student at the University of Maryland. She is also survived by several cousins.
Her burial will be private.
Donations in her memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Sara's care has been entrusted to Black's Funeral Home.
