Frances Ellen (Boyd) Black of Mebane, North Carolina formally of Thurmont, passed away January 22, 2018 at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Medical Center with her family by her side.
She was born September 24, 1932 in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Russell and Pebble (Whatley) Boyd and raised by her "mother" and "daddy" the late Charles & Louise (Boyd) Morningstar.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Lee Black; son Jeffrey Black and grandson Jason Fizer; brothers Charles & Coleman M. Boyd; sisters Betty Smith & Doris Miller; and beloved "sister" Charlotte Morningstar Roche.
Frances helped raise both a family and a business aiding her husband to build what became Black's Hilltop Orchard of Thurmont. Additionally she worked as a waitress for Cozy Restaurant (Thurmont), Comus Inn (Dickerson), and Holiday Inn (Frederick)
She was a 4-H leader for the Thurmont Blue Ribbon 4-H club for many years as well as being active with the Mothers March of Dimes. She enjoyed traveling and camping with her family and entering prize winning fruit in both county and state fairs.
She is survived by her children; sons Terry Black (Eileen) of Thurmont, MD, Ronald Black (Beverly) of Fairfield, PA, Jerry Black (Margaret); daughters Wanda Fizer (David) of Morgantown, WV, Lana Gladhill of Brunswick, GA; daughter-in-law Sharon Black; a brother William Boyd; lovingly known as Mimi to 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She will also be remembered by her special friend & casino buddy Blanche Campbell.
A memorial service will be held on Friday February 9, 2018; 11 A.M. at the Guardian Hose Activities Building 123 East Main Street Thurmont, MD, with Deacon Charles Barnhart officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Eyler's Valley Chapel Cemetery.
